Reviews on Ford Ranger's reliability are quite mixed. While some owners praise the model for being absolutely dependable and lovely to drive, others insist it is among the worst vehicles they have ever owned. The negatives seem to be prevailing, ranging from faulty electrics to major engine and brake issues. One of the most common complaints that drivers have is transmission related - it is reported to be too slow to change, clunky, and just annoying and not enjoyable to drive with.

Ford Ranger offers a wide variety of driver-assistance technologies. The former detects pedestrians, alerts the driver, and applies the brakes if the driver does not respond and the latter monitors road signs and ensures the vehicle does not go over the changing speed limits.

For its first few generations on the North American market, the Ford Ranger was only being offered in a compact two-door configuration. Four-door variants were available on other markets, but did not enter the United States until the model range's fourth generation there.
